Unique Security Systems

By Jesse McKormick

For good reason, protecting the home and family from crime is one of the highest priorities of homeowners. The ways we protect our homes continue to become more technologically advanced, but at the same time, determined burglars continue to devise ways to thwart these measures. What are some of the less common home protection methods out there that can be as good as an advanced home security system?

For frequent travelers, or those who otherwise aren't home very much for one reason or another, you may want a way to be able to check in on your property when want. A system of webcams placed in the most important rooms can be a good way to do this. There are ways to set them to be remotely accessed, so you can view a live feed of your home on your phone or computer from anywhere with an internet connection. One placed at your door can also tell you who's ringing the bell.

An even less common system is to buy or build a wi-fi controlled robot. They often have wheels and a webcam, and you can access and control them over the internet with a tablet or computer. You can use it to periodically roll around the house and check on everything. Plus, it's just darn cool to have a remote-controlled robot patrol your home.

There's a reason that guard dogs have been so commonly used to keep out intruders for centuries: because they're darn effective. If there are signs that large dog lives in a home, most thieves will move on without looking twice. Like everything, there are upsides and downsides to using a dog for home protection. Owning a dog comes with the full set of responsibilities that you would imagine it would. You have to put forth the time, money and effort to feed, train and care for the animal. But if your family is up to the responsibility, a guard dog can be both an effective way to defend your home and to enrich your family life.

If you plan to leave the dog at home when you're away on vacation or what have you, you'll want to ensure that the dog will be cared for. You could have someone the dog knows as a friend drop by to feed the dog and check on the house, and/or set up a machine to automatically dispense food and water for the dog. If you have the webcams mentioned earlier, you can check to make sure it's working.

Lastly, outer lights can actually be a good home security system. If you set up motion-sensitive lights to brighten up the most popular entry points of the house (such as the back windows and door, and even upper story windows), it discourage a thief from approaching. In burglary, discretion is the name of the game, and it's hard to be discreet when your only entrances into the targeted house are bathed in light. They likely won't like to risk being spotted by neighbors or people driving by.
